Centerless Grinding

Centerless grinding and O.D. grinding are effective surface grinding methods for round and cylindrical parts, helping achieve improved roundness, ultra-fine outside diameter finishes, and extremely tight tolerances.

With decades of experience meeting the strict regulations and certification requirements of the automotive, aerospace, and medical device industries, we apply those standards as benchmarks across all products we manufacture.

Custom-made unique component

Swiss turning is ideal for miniature components and is especially effective for producing long, slender parts. This technology enables multiple operations, including milling, turning, threading, cross-drilling, engraving, and other machining processes, to be completed on a single machine. By combining these operations into one setup, we can reduce the need for costly secondary processing, save time, lower costs, and ensure each part is manufactured to precise specifications.

Components made through Swiss turning are widely used in industries such as aerospace, electronics, energy and fuel systems, and medical devices. Common examples include shafts, contact pins, housings, inserts, sockets, implants, and related products.

Divine manufactures parts for a wide range of industries, from highly regulated sectors that demand consistent, high-precision components to applications requiring clear and distinctive product identification.

Fitted for your design and purpose

From small batches of a few hundred pieces to high-volume production in the hundreds of thousands, Swiss turning enables us to produce complex components on a single machine. This capability allows us to meet unique design specifications, even for highly demanding applications.

Advantage of Centerless Grinding process

Centerless Grinding provides several advantages when compared with other machining and manufacturing methods.

No room for deflection

The workpiece is firmly supported by the regulating wheel, which presses it against the abrasive grains of the grinding wheel. Because it is well supported beneath the grinding cut and throughout the full length of the cut, deflection is virtually eliminated during the process. This also allows for heavier passes compared with grinding between centers.

Ability to grind brittle materials and distorted parts

In centerless grinding, no axial thrust is applied to the workpiece during the process, making it possible to grind parts of different sizes and geometries. Because there is no end pressure, centerless grinders can also process long pieces made from brittle materials, as well as parts with slight distortion.

Short loading time

The short loading time enables a more continuous process compared with grinding between centers. As the name suggests, the workpiece does not need to be supported between centers and can move directly into the through-grinding process. The work blade holds the workpiece in position and at the proper height, which is essential for achieving the required diameter tolerance and roundness of the bar material.

Grind large quantities

Centerless grinding can be used for workpieces of many different sizes. Tools such as gravity chutes, hopper feeders, and magazines help adapt the process to various part dimensions.
