Laser Marking

This ink-free process creates permanent marks that are rub-resistant, solvent-resistant, and scratch-proof. It produces no waste and does not require flammable or volatile solvents, eliminating the need for related disposal.

Laser marking is a low-cost method of adding text, logos, and graphics on component surface. Laser marking is what happens when the beam interacts with the surface of a material, slightly altering its properties or appearance.

What is Laser Marking used for?

This process is commonly used to apply markings such as serial numbers, part numbers, and logos to component surfaces. We provide marking services for components used across various industries.

For high-end electronics, permanent codes and alphanumeric characters can be marked on headers, terminals, switches, and other parts to support quality assurance.

In the automotive industry, laser-marked codes are used for traceability of components and assemblies.

In the aerospace industry, Datamatrix codes can be applied to strategic parts such as turbine components.

In the medical industry, machine-readable codes can be marked on medical and dental instrument components.

What metals can be Laser Marking?

For nearly all metals, our fiber laser machines can create readable marks quickly and efficiently. This process is ideal for engraving a wide range of metal surfaces, including aluminum, steel, stainless steel, brass, and other alloys.

Amwerk in detailsPractical uses of laser marking

Overview

Laser marking is commonly used for component traceability and identification. It allows parts to be tracked throughout the manufacturing process and can even help identify the supplier that produced them. Common identification formats include data matrix codes, QR codes, and alphanumeric serial numbers. We frequently apply laser marking to aluminum, steel, and stainless steel turned parts.

Aluminum

Because aluminum surfaces have high thermal conductivity, fiber lasers can mark them at elevated temperatures and create deep marks on bare aluminum. This helps ensure the markings remain readable after anodizing. AL 6061 is the most commonly laser-marked alloy, although all aluminum types can be marked. Typical aluminum parts we process include flanges, knobs, and more.

Steel

Steel is a hard material and usually requires longer marking times than many other metals. However, marking speed can be improved by creating white marks instead of black marks. White marks provide strong contrast against the natural color of most steel surfaces. We can laser mark any steel alloy, including anodized steel, carbon steel, and tool steel. Typical steel parts we process include plates, bodies, caps, and more.

Stainless Steel

Laser marking is most commonly applied to stainless steel grades SUS 303, 304, and 316, but it can be used on any stainless steel grade. Typical stainless steel parts we process include port housings and other automotive components.
